For all the time you spend doing your job shouldn’t you get some credit for it? This is about your blog and how it can help you build traffic and new customers for your business.

You should be the guy everyone looks to for advice in your field. However, it’s kind of awkward putting yourself out there as “the expert”. When someone puts “Expert” or “Visionary” in their Linkedin title it usually just makes us roll our eyes.

Even if you are not totally comfortable being “that guy”, you have to look objectively as you can to see how it would be beneficial to your business.

Everyone’s an expert on something, and there’s nothing wrong with sharing your unique knowledge with others because even if you teach them some things, you’ll never teach them enough that they won’t need you.

If you want to become a thought leader or industry expert you need a good website, and a blog site that helps you to connect and communicate with your audience. However, most blogs just don’t cut it as ones that make you look professional. Remember, this is the wrapper for your gift of knowledge to others! Don’t wrap the gift in a 1999 website shell.

Keep It Real.
Check out what you like. Include a photo of you give things a personal, warmer feel to a site. Logos of organizations you belong to gives a feeling of credibility and legitimacy. Keep the language simple! No industry jargon or fancy words nobody but your co-workers use.

Responsive Design.
This is design that changes to fit what the reader is using without them doing anything special. These blogs look great on a desktop, tablet, or phonee. Try it out by using all your devices on the site, or grab the edge of your browser and start shrinking it to see how the site layout changes as the view-able space becomes smaller.

We’ve used WordPress for a long time and can’t find anything that comes close to giving us the ease of use and flexibility of WordpPress. Most hosting accounts (like godaddy, and hostgator) come with WordPress as a simple installation option.

Email List and Campaign Management.
Get a newsletter sender signup, creator and list manager all in one. They are worth it. Mailchimp and Campaigner are super easy to use. These platforms allow visitors to easily subscribe to receive news automatically whenever new posts happen or whatever, or you can manually send them emails.

WordPress SEO by Yoast.
Once you have your website up and running there is a lot you can do by way of optimization, although nothing seems to beat writing lots of awesome content. For those who want to geek out and optimize their blogs, this plugin is great.

Now, you can do this yourself for free, but it takes commitment. If you print out your emails so you can read them and then give them back to your assistant to send with comments, then this stuff is just not for you. Don’t ask your kids or low-level employees to do it for free or it will never help you. Don’t give this to the the web hosting company that promises professional websites with SEO for $10/month. Just hire someone to do it who knows what they’re doing. For a few thousand dollars at most, it’s a small investment to make for the benefit you’ll receive. You can always pay to have everything set up properly and then take it from there!

Most importantly, a blog without good content is like a car with no gas, it might look ok, but won’t take you anywhere.
